History
The Cibali Campus is located on the grounds of the historical Tekel Cibali Works, which opened in 1884 as the state tobacco factory. The factory was then renovated and transformed into the University campus and awarded the Europa Nostra award for restoration and conservation.
To compare the past with the present, visit the Rezan Has Museum, located on campus, and you will see their displays of black and white photographs of the original factory. The other main attractions at the museum are a Byzantine Cistern called Karanlik Cesme (Dark Fountain) and the ruins of the Ottoman-era Turkish bath, or hamam. The museum also showcases a permanent exhibition of artefacts dating from the Neolithic to the Selcuk periods as well as temporary exhibitions of high-quality art and historical artefacts such as paintings, ceramics, jewellery and photography.
Location
The campus is easily accessible by public transport from central areas of the city such as Taksim, Besiktas, Nisantasi, Eminonu, Mecidiyekoy and Etiler. More information on travelling to campus is available on the Find Us page.
